Great Barrier Reef Location
OK! Where Is It?

You can see from the Great Barrier Reef Location Map above that it is in the Coral Sea, off the east coast of Queensland, and I'm here to tell you that it extends over 2,000kms from the Murray Islands near Papua New Guinea in the north, to just north of Lady Elliott Island in the south. It is a unique ecosystem, and one of the 7 Wonders of the World. You can imagine it hugging the coast ... like the crust on a loaf of bread ... but between 15-150kms out from the coast.

It is made up of over 900 islands ranging from tiny to over 65kms wide, and 3,000 plus reef systems and coral cays. In area it is 280,000sq kms, making it the largest coral reef in the world, and the only living thing visible from outer space. The "sand" on the beaches is really pulverised coral, so when you hear people talk about "coral sands" that is exactly what they mean.

OK, now you know the Great Barrier Reef location we'll start finding out about the islands.
